Yolo-Solano Grazing School: Managing Grazing Ruminants for Fuels Reduction
Is your property threatened by wildfire? Are you tired of weed whacking and mowing to manage vegetation! The Solano Resource Conservation District and the Yolo County Fire Safe Council are partnering with grazing expert, Sarah Keiser (Wild Oat Hollow) to host the Grazing School: Managing Grazing Ruminants for Fuels Reduction. Come learn about prescribed grazing and the power of community grazing cooperatives!
Solano RCD and Yolo County RCD have funding from CAL FIRE to facilitate prescribed grazing projects for fuels management in the high fire areas of Yolo and Solano counties. Prescribed grazing uses grazing ruminants to consume fuels that propel wildfire (grasses and other groundcover) to lessen the amount of fuel available for wildfires. Prescribed grazing has other benefits for the land beyond fuels management, such as: weed management, soil health, and reduced erosion.
To provide more information on managing livestock for fuels management, the grazing school will feature:
- prescribed grazing basics
- fencing and watering
- grazing cooperatives (and how to establish one)
- basic animal husbandry
- hoof trimming
- incoulation
- small ruminant health
A grazing cooperative only needs two people that share grazing ruminants!
